40-Hour Basic Mediation Course

The 40-Hour Basic Mediation Course is designed to give individuals the skills and credentials they need to become professional mediators. This training focuses on the mediation model that can be utilized in all Texas cities and counties. This course meets or exceeds the majority of other state’s requirements. Individuals actively participate in practice mediation following each lecture session, and certificates are provided to participants upon completion of the course.

The course consists of 10 days of classes at four (4) hour Zoom course sessions over five weeks. We know that many of you already have current careers and are trying to start a side job in mediation. Therefore, we hold classes in the middle of the week after 5 PM to accommodate students who have normal work hours.

  • Question: What is included with the 40-hour Basic Mediation Course?
    • Answer: The 40-Hour Basic Mediation Course is what is required by the State of Texas to mediate in the court system. This course includes a robust ethical portion and modern marketing techniques that will help you not only with your mediation business but with any other business you pursue. Upon finishing the course, students will receive a State of Texas-approved 40-Hour Basic Mediation Training Certificate. TX State Bar Sponsor # is A16719.
  • Question: Are there any mandatory state requirements to mediate?
    • Answer: 28 of 50 states have comprehensive statewide standards for any mediators who wish to be recognized by the courts(e.g., trained, included on court rosters) as qualified to mediate. Our training certificates can be used in many other states.
  • Question: What does it take to be a court-appointed mediator?
    • Answer: Of the 28 states that require training for civil mediation, 14 states require 40 hours, four states require between 30 and 40, 6 states require between 20 and 30, and 2 states require less than 20 hours of training.
  • Question: Does a mediator need to be a lawyer, or Do I need a degree?
    • Answer: Most states DO NOT require any degree to become a mediator, including Texas. Texas does not require any degree to mediate.
  • Question: Can I use my State of Texas Basic Civil Mediation in another state?
    • Answer: Many states will recognize your State of Texas 40-Hour Basic Mediation Certificate. Additional training may be required in other states. Many State Bars will recognize your State of Texas Basic Civil Mediation Certificate to receive MCLE for attorneys.
